Before it was a chapter and a verse, it was a real place, a real day, real people with dust on their feet. When you know their world, the words come alive. Here we walk back into it, the history, the customs, the land, and the language, so Scripture means what it meant to the ones who first heard it.
Why This Matters
The first step in understanding any passage is to ask: who was speaking, to whom, when, where, and why? What did those words mean to the people hearing them? Only then do we move to doctrine and to what it means for us. History does not sit over Scripture. It opens the door so we can walk in.
History, culture, and language serve to illuminate the Word, never to judge it. Where they seem to disagree, the Bible stands.
