Who You Are
You are not who people say you are. You are not who failure says you are. You are not defined by leaders, governments, or the room you walk into. The child of God has one identity, given by one Lord, and settled in one place: in Christ alone.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."2 Corinthians 5:17, NKJV
Why This Study Matters
Many of God's people love Him, pray, and go to church, yet live defeated for one reason: they do not know who they are. And the enemy knows exactly why that matters. Look at the very first words the tempter spoke to Jesus in the wilderness: "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread" (Matthew 4:3), and again, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down" (Matthew 4:6). Before he tempted the Lord's appetite or His trust, Satan attacked His identity. If You are.
He has never changed tactics. If the enemy can keep you unsure of who you are, he can keep you from acting like it. A king's son who thinks he is an orphan will live like an orphan. So this study does one thing: it gathers what the Bible actually says about who the child of God is, where that identity comes from, the authority that goes with it, and how to keep walking in it, so that when the accuser whispers "if," you can answer, like your Lord, "It is written."
The world hands out identities like name tags: your job, your past, your politics, your failures, other people's opinions. Heaven issues identity another way, by birth. And what God writes, no man can overwrite.
Born, Not Labeled
Identity in Christ is not a mindset you adopt; it is a birth you receive. "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God" (John 1:12-13). Read that list again: not of blood, your ancestry does not decide it; not of the will of the flesh, your own effort cannot produce it; not of the will of man, no human being can confer it or take it away. Born of God.
Paul tells us how we enter into Christ, where this identity lives: "For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ" (Galatians 3:26-27). Baptism in the name of Jesus is where the believing sinner is placed into Christ and clothed with Him, taking on the family name, for Paul bows his knees to the Father "from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named" (Ephesians 3:15). Then God fills His child with His own Spirit: "you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, 'Abba, Father'" (Romans 8:15), and "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God" (Romans 8:16). This is the full new birth Jesus described, "born of water and the Spirit" (John 3:5), and it is the doorway to everything in this study.
Your identity in Christ is not self-esteem. It is a legal, living reality: born of God, baptized into Christ, wearing His name, carrying His Spirit. Heaven recognizes you.
The Catalog of Grace
Here is what the word of God actually declares about the one who is in Christ. Do not skim this list. Read each line as a statement about you, because that is exactly what it is.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Twenty-four declarations, and not one of them is earned, voted on, or issued by man. Every line is something God says about you because you are in Christ. This is your identification. Carry it.
Seated with Him
Identity comes with authority. Because you are His, seated "together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus" (Ephesians 2:6), the risen Lord has delegated real authority to His people. Jesus declared, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth" (Matthew 28:18), and then, on that basis, He sent His church.
Hear what He has placed in the hands of His people. "Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you" (Luke 10:19). "And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues" (Mark 16:17). "And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven" (Matthew 16:19). "And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son" (John 14:13).
This is not theory; the book of Acts shows it working. Peter, with no silver or gold, said, "In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk" (Acts 3:6), and the lame man walked. Paul turned to a spirit of divination and said, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her" (Acts 16:18), "and he came out that very hour." The authority is exercised in one name, the name of Jesus, the name you wear, and it operates through submitted vessels, for James 4:7 teaches that we submit to God first, and then the resisted enemy must flee (see our companion study, Submit, Then Resist). Our weapons "are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds" (2 Corinthians 10:4).
You do not muster authority by volume or willpower. You inherit it by identity and exercise it by faith in His name. The question is never whether Jesus has authority; it is whether you know who you are in Him. And remember the order that authority flows through: a submitted vessel, and a submitted vessel is a Spirit-filled vessel. Staying Who You Are
Identity is given in a moment; walking in it is a daily life. "As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith" (Colossians 2:6-7). The Bible names the habits that keep a child of God living like one.
"I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing" (John 15:5). Authority flows through connection. A branch broken from the vine keeps its shape for a while, but its life is gone. Stay attached: daily prayer, daily communion with Him.
"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Romans 12:2). You will default to the world's identity for you unless the word rewrites your thinking. Paul prayed that "the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling" (Ephesians 1:18). Read who you are until you believe it.
"be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18) is a continuing command. "Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh" (Galatians 5:16), and keep "building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit" (Jude 20). The identity was sealed by the Spirit; it is walked out in the Spirit.
Sin does not un-child you, but it clouds your confidence and grieves the Spirit. Keep short accounts: "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). A clean conscience walks tall.
Identity grows in the family, "not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together" (Hebrews 10:25). Isolated sheep forget who they are; the flock, the word, and the watch-care of a pastor keep your identity spoken over you.
Jesus met every "if You are" with "It is written" (Matthew 4:4). Do the same. When the accuser hands you an old name tag, answer out loud with the word: I am a new creation. I am a child of God. I am bought with a price. "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony" (Revelation 12:11).
Christ Alone
Now let it be settled: the child of God is not identified by human beings. Not by the crowd's opinion, not by leaders or governments, not by the atmosphere of any room you walk into. Scripture is blunt about this: "You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men" (1 Corinthians 7:23). A soul purchased by the blood of Jesus must not hand its identity back to human owners.
People's opinions cannot define you: "For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7). The room you walk into does not assign your worth; the fear of it is a trap: "The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe" (Proverbs 29:25). Leaders and governments do not hold your identity either; the psalmist wrote, "It is better to trust in the LORD Than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the LORD Than to put confidence in princes" (Psalm 118:8-9), and when human authority collides with God's, the apostles answered, "We ought to obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29). Even the approval of religious men is not the point: "For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ" (Galatians 1:10).
This is not arrogance toward people; it is allegiance to God. We honor leaders, love people, and respect authority, but we are not defined by them, because our birth certificate is from above: "born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God" (John 1:13). So when you walk into a room, any room, you do not walk in asking the room who you are. You walk in knowing, and because the kingdom of God is within you, you bring more into that room than the room could ever put on you. "If God is for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31).
Compliments cannot promote you and criticism cannot demote you, because neither one issued your identity. Christ did. Your identity is in Christ alone, and what He has written, no man can overwrite.
Pray It Out Loud
"Lord Jesus, thank You that I am Yours. I was born of God, baptized into Your name, and filled with Your Spirit, and today I take my identity from You alone. I am a new creation; the old things have passed away. I am Your child and Your heir, chosen before the foundation of the world, accepted in the Beloved, redeemed and forgiven through Your blood. I am the righteousness of God in Christ, and there is no condemnation over me.
I refuse every name the enemy, my past, or other people have tried to write over me. I am not identified by man; I am not the slave of anyone's opinion; I do not take my worth from leaders, governments, or any room I walk into. I am bought with a price, and I belong to God.
Seated with You in heavenly places, I will walk today in the authority of Your name, abide in You, renew my mind with Your word, stay filled with Your Spirit, and say what You say about me. My identity is in Christ alone. In the name of Jesus, Amen."
