What Does the Bible Say?
The Holy Spirit is not a separate person from God, he is the Spirit of Jesus himself, the presence of the Father dwelling in believers. The Bible promises the Holy Spirit to everyone who repents and is baptized in Jesus's name (Acts 2:38-39).
Key Scriptures
John 14:16-18 NKJV
""And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.""
Jesus promises the Spirit, then immediately says "I will come to you." The coming of the Comforter is the coming of Christ himself in spiritual form.
Acts 2:38-39 NKJV
""Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.""
The Holy Spirit is a promise for everyone the Lord calls, not just the Apostles, not just the first century church. The gift is available today on the same terms.
Romans 8:9 NKJV
"But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His."
Paul equates "the Spirit of God" with "the Spirit of Christ" in the same verse. They are not two separate spirits, the Spirit of God is the Spirit of Christ.
2 Corinthians 3:17 NKJV
"Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."
"The Lord is the Spirit", Paul does not say the Lord sent the Spirit as a separate person. He says the Lord IS the Spirit. This is the Apostolic understanding of the indwelling presence of God.
Gospel Focus
Trinitarian theology teaches the Holy Spirit is a third co-equal person distinct from the Father and the Son. But Jesus said "I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you" (John 14:18), the coming of the Spirit was the return of Jesus in spiritual form. Paul writes "the Lord is the Spirit" (2 Corinthians 3:17) and that Christ lives in believers through the Spirit (Galatians 2:20; Romans 8:9-11). The Holy Spirit is not a separate person, he is the very presence of the Lord Jesus.
