What Does the Bible Say?
The Bible presents speaking in tongues as the initial evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit, the same sign given at Pentecost (Acts 2), at Cornelius's house, and at Ephesus. It is not a secondary blessing but the biblical marker of Spirit baptism.
Key Scriptures
Acts 2:4 NKJV
"And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."
On the Day of Pentecost, 120 disciples received the Holy Spirit, and all of them spoke in tongues. Not some. Not the most spiritual. All of them.
Acts 10:44-46 NKJV
"While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God."
The Jewish believers knew the Gentiles had received the Holy Spirit by the same evidence they had received: tongues. This was the confirmation.
Acts 19:6 NKJV
"And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied."
Years after Pentecost, in Ephesus, the pattern is the same. Paul asks if they have received the Holy Spirit, and the evidence that they have is tongues.
1 Corinthians 14:2 NKJV
"For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries."
Paul clarifies what happens when you speak in tongues: you are speaking directly to God. This is not mere noise, it is the Spirit praying through you in a language your natural mind does not know.
Gospel Focus
The Apostolic church does not teach tongues as one of many gifts, or as an experience reserved for some believers. The pattern in Acts is consistent: every time a group receives the Holy Spirit and it is confirmed, tongues are present. Joel prophesied it (Joel 2:28). Jesus promised it (Acts 1:8). Peter explained it (Acts 2:16). Paul spoke in tongues more than all of them (1 Corinthians 14:18). The sign has not ceased.
